Want a luxury looking planter to decorate your home but don’t want to pay the luxury price? Keep reading to see how I transformed this basic $12 Walmart planter pot into a beautiful high-end looking planter using only a can of spray paint!
I found this Better Homes & Gardens planter in the Walmart outdoor garden section priced at only $11.50 (plus tax). There was a variety of planters of different shapes and sizes to choose from, but I was looking for a round shaped planter and this fit the bill for what I was wanting to home my Dracaena Lisa Cane in the corner of my dining room.
I wanted a metallic bronze color to tie in with the metal legs of my dining table, so I chose the matte metallic Venetian Bronze by Rust-Oleum. It’s a beautiful color that gives a high end look – you could hardly tell the planter was made from cheap plastic after I was done with it. They have several other fun metallic colors to choose from that you can find at Home Depot or your local hardware store (I actually ordered mine from Amazon).
I found a shady area outside my house where there was no wind and laid down a large drop cloth to avoid any unwanted overspray. I placed my planter upside-down to start, gave the paint can a good shake and got started! I sprayed several light layers, allowing about 10 minutes in between coats until I was satisfied with the paint coverage. I waited about an hour before flipping the pot up-right to spray the other half (I live in a dry climate, so depending on where you live you may want to allow more time for the paint to cure). I also sprayed inside the planter, only to cover a few inches from the top since that was all that would be seen. Once the paint was applied, I let it sit overnight to make sure it was totally cured before starting the planting process.
The next day I gave it a thorough look over to see if I missed any spots. All looked good so I was off to planting! I planted my Dracaena in its new home, gave it some water, added some Spanish moss on the top to finish it off, and voila! It turned out great. This was such a quick and easy project, and a very inexpensive way to add a statement in your home. The best part is you can make it exactly how you want it! I love how the color of the planter ties in with my dining table and looks intentional. The smallest changes can make dramatic impact to a space!
Materials I Used:
- Planter (was $11.50 in-store at Walmart)
